Millions of greetings cards are sent over the Christmas period. Despite the huge amounts of printed cards it is always much nicer and much more personal to send handmade cards. A handmade card will always stand out and be much more appreciated by the recipient.

There are many great card making supplies out there and you will always be able to find lots of Christmas themed craft project and ideas both online and offline. It is really easy to get started with card making so you don’t need to worry if you have never done it before.

The best way to learn is simply by having a go and getting stuck in. Here are some of our top tips for making your own Christmas cards:

Don’t be a perfectionist

The charm of handmade cards is that they look like they are handmade. A few wonky bit s of paper and splodges of glue are not the end of the world. You will get better in time and these things will become rarer but don’t expect to get it right first time.

Choose a card making kit

The vast choice of card making supplies can be a little bit overwhelming to a new card maker. A card making kit will usually contain all that you need to make an amount of cards. This means that all the supplies are pre-picked for you and all you have do is assemble the cards. This is a very good starting block for beginners.

Find some good inspiration

One of the hardest things in card making is designing the card and laying it all out in the right way. Dig out some of your old birthday cards and see how they are set out. Have a look at where the images and working is places, the colours that are used and the shape of the card.

Then try making a copy of a card that you like to start off with. You will soon learn where to place things and what colours to use together.

Use quality glue and scissors

Glue and scissors are two very basic card making essentials. Make sure that yours are good quality. If you buy cheap scissors and glue then this will be reflected in the finish of your card. A guillotine will also be very useful if you can afford one.

If you are a beginner then here is a simple list that you may be interested in. It helps distinguish different tools used for crafting as well as leather crafting.

If you have also had your experiences in leather crafting this list may actually do you good as well so it’s advisable that you read it too.

Different Basic Tools for Leather Craft

Cutting – These are usually knives, shears, cutters or chisels which are used to cut the leather to the desired size, shape and design. There are also different types of knives for this purpose. Some are round, trim or for utility while some are specialised for carving or shaving.

Skiving and Splitting – There are different set for this purpose usually called the skife. Although leather splitters and French edgers could also function in the same way.

Edging – French edgers used for skiving could be used as edger. But there are also edge bevellers and bisonette edgers when you really want to craft the edges of the leather.

Swivel Knife

Punching – To punch a hole in the leather, there are a number of tools that could be used for this purpose, all with similar function. Among them are drive punches, rotary punches and bag punchers.

Piercing – To pierce the leather, needles or different types of awls (round, diamond, etc) or varied shapes and sizes chisels could do the trick.

Grooving – For putting groves in your material, you can select from a number of tools for this purpose: freehand grovers, groving clippers, adjustable stitching grovers or v-gouges.

Leather Crafting, like wood crafting is becoming more and more famous of a hobby. At first, I really found it weird why people would like doing leather crafts, but in the end it was really enjoyable!

Leather Craft Tools is one my main resources for information about leather crafting, they provided me the knowledge I actually was looking for.

Handmade jewelry is not only totally unique but often far better quality than generically factory produced jewelry. This style of jewelry cannot be found in every high street store, and offers the buyer an exclusive piece of jewelry. Finding the perfect gift can be a challenge, and when you want jewelry finding something special can be a problem. Handmade jewelry is hand crafted without the use of large machinery. Therefore every piece has a huge amount of craftsmanship, and time put into it.

There are strict guidelines when it comes to being able to class your jewelry as handmade. Every item has to follow these guidelines, and this ensures that only top quality pieces are produced and sold. The jewelry will need to be hand guided to achieve the classification of handmade. There are certain pieces of equipment that can be used; however, they all need to be used by hand. Handmade jewelry has become very popular all over the world. There are some very popular designers who are making a name for themselves in this industry.

The concept of buying handmade jewelry is very appealing to many as you are guaranteed a cleaner and healthy piece of jewelry. The types of materials used are often very unique, and are ideal for this style of jewelry. The artists that are creating the pieces have learnt special techniques, and styles, enabling them to create a master piece every time. They want their pieces of jewelry to stand out, and therefore they place a great deal of effort, and high standards into every single item. You are guaranteed to have a piece of jewelry that not only looks amazing but is also well made.

Although handmade jewelry tends to be more expensive that other types of factory produced pieces, it takes longer to make, and is of a far higher quality. You really do get what you pay for with jewelry, and if you want a piece that lasts and looks stunning paying a premium will be necessary. If you are keen to ensure that your chosen piece of jewelry looks great and totally different from anything else on the market, buying handmade jewelry is the only way to ensure this.

Although the artist will keep up with all of the current fashion trends, the pieces that they create will have a different approach to the style. Many people prefer buying handmade jewelry as they feel that they are not only buying an expertly made piece of jewelry, but also helping small businesses. In today’s climate running and owning any business is difficult, and ensuring that you keep your customers happy can be a challenge.

Florists, just like any other creative trade, have their trade secrets. These secrets include flower matching, ribbon matching, display choice, real flowers or silk flowers, real flowers or candy flowers, and so the list continues. A florist’s arrangement is nothing without the key ingredients. Every artist works differently but floral supplies are the tools by which those masterpieces are made. The base of almost any project is florist’s foam. Wet foam is a spongy material designed to both hold water and keep the flowers in place, and comes in a variety of grades, dependent on your floral supplies needs. Although most are for one time use, you can always find reusable foam.

Foam can be a bit tricky. For a fuller and easier piece to create, the foam should sit just higher than the vase or container the flowers are going into. It should be wedged in tightly, to make sure it stays in place while saturated. Finally, when talking about foam, among your list of necessary floral supplies is a craft saw; it’s the easiest way to shape the foam. If not, kitchen knives and wire also work for shaping the foam. But what if you’re using a clear container? That saturated thick foam isn’t the most attractive thing to look at. In that case, you’re better choice would be a metal frog. They are trickier to work with, and come in various sizes, but rewarding in a clear container. To fill up the rest of your vase, colored fake gemstones and small rocks become perfect floral supplies, just as long as you make sure the stems don’t get crushed.

The flowers need something to be displayed in, generally a vase. However, among the list of floral supplies are other less common holders. Small decorative buckets, long planter box-containers, parfait glasses, and any number of other containers become floral supplies in the hands of a master florist. But the most important floral supplies are-let’s face it-the flowers. Flowers can be bought just about anywhere: buy a bouquet at the grocery store or the gas station, at a florist or craft store, or in bulk from an online outlet. A florist makes it a point to know which flowers match to each other, which colors to use for certain occasions, and how to arrange the flowers for best aesthetic appeal. The floral craft is not simple. In fact, it’s a trade with many little minute details. The best way to create the best flowers is to know the medium, and how to use the floral supplies to your best advantage.

Ceramics as a material were initially used by the scientists in the space industry. They used the ceramic sheets on the outside to create a heat shield against the high temperatures which were generated when the shuttles were entering the earths atmosphere. Once the ceramics as material was popular its first use was in the ball bearings industry where they used the ceramic material to make ball bearings which were being used wherever there were high intense heat situations. Now the ceramic industry is a large industry with the ceramics being used in every conceivable form ranging form the flooring industry where ceramic tiles are popular to the high end aerospace industry. Initially the ceramics were the refractory material which is still used in the flooring industry but for the high end uses there were hybrids developed like the silica carbide and the silica nitride. These ceramics have advantages over the traditional steel or other materials.

Ceramics are corrosion resistant as well as they are heat resistant and of course they much better at bearing heavier loads than steel. It is for this specific reason that the ceramics have been used by the industry even in the medicine world. Specific for bone implants and orthopedic restorations the ceramic material is used as it is very hard and tough to sustain pressures. The other major use of ceramics is now being done in the semiconductors world. The integrated chip circuit’s that are used computers and other high techs gadgets have ceramic material. The ceramic material is also used in manufacturing of insulators and capacitors.

In fact one of the major uses of ceramic has been in the cosmetic dentistry industry especially the porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are used by the cosmetic dentists makes new veneers for use on their patients. Porcelain veneers have a vitreous and glassy feel and that is why the look good on the tooth for a glassy white finish as dental crowns. Ceramics as material is been continually evolved to make sure that in nowadays world it is environment friendly and can be easily disposed off also. These materials are hard and hence pose challenges when they are recycled as they cannot break down easily. So there is more research being done nowadays to look into this aspect of the ceramics.

Bead jewelry making is a work which may be done by anyone, even if they are not trained specially for bead work. The best advantage of making your own jewelry or ornaments is that they are 100% genuine.

Applique as a word finds its origins from the French word, and in the given context means ‘that which has been applied.’ In the broader sense of the given context, it refers to a small ornament or patch applied onto another surface. Applique refers to the needlework technique in which pieces of fabric, embroidery or other such materials which are used for sewing, and are sewn over another piece of fabric to create designs, pictures or patterns. Hastings embroidery is one of the most often quoted pieces of appliqué embroidery work, and is particularly suited for work which needs to be seen across from a certain distance such as a banner.

Applique embroidery has been an important art form finding its origins as early as the 18th century from the kingdom of Danhome, and is still widely used in Benin, west Africa particularly around the area of Abomey. Dresden plate and Sunbonnet sue are some of the examples of traditional American quilt blocks that are constructed with both patchwork and appliqué. Applique embroidery is extensively used in quilting, also keep in mind that appliqué embroidery and patchwork are not one and the same. A lot of quilt work done around the world use appliqué, whether it is the Baltimore album quilts, Broderie perse, Hawaiian quilts, Amish quilts and the rally quilts of India and Pakistan, they all use appliqué.

Applied pieces usually have their edges folded under, and are then attached to either a straight stitch which are generally two to three millimeters in from the edge, or a satin stitch which is stitched all around overlapping the edge, this may be either glued or straight stitched on first to ensure a neat edge and positional stability. The buttonhole stitch is a good example of decorative stitching over a significant amount of the appliqué piece, with the thread present there to give out an artistic effect seldom seen otherwise in other works. Generally when three dimensional items are concerned, then the central fixing technique is employed where the edges of the applied piece intended to rise up from the background fabric.

Machine embroidered appliques are not only fun and easy, they also allow you to really get creative by using up any stray pieces of fabric you’ve kept around. No leftover fabric? Then you can have even more fun by grabbing your scissors and cutting up those clothes you still have but haven’t worn in years. Use appliques to embellish an inexpensive gift or to create something unique for yourself very quickly. Try it yourself and see how much fun it is.

Of course, the first thing to do is load your applique design into your embroidery machine. Next hoop the material your finished design will be on. Be sure to stabilize it just as you would for any kind of machine embroidery. When you push the ‘Start’ button the outline of the applique stitches first. Because it’s going to be covered later you can use any thread color you want but it’s a good habit to select a thread color close to the fabric color. Once the outline is complete your machine will stop. Place a piece of your applique fabric over the outline. Make it large enough to adequately cover the outline but not so large as to be cumbersome. You can safely remove the hoop from your machine if you want to position your fabric but don’t unhoop. You’ll need to hold the fabric in place over the outline so it doesn’t pucker or bunch up on you. You can try using double-stick tape but usually it’s just as easy to hold it down. Watch your fingers.

Now the tacking stitch will sew, tacking the applique fabric down. Then remove the hoop from the machine but once again, don’t unhoop yet! Cut away the excess applique fabric from around the tacking stitch. Get close to the tacking stitches but take your time and try not to cut too many of them. After most of the fabric is cut away it’s easy to trim off the stray pieces. Put the hoop back in the machine and push the button one more time. Your machine will now run another tacking stitch around the pattern. It’s usually a V stitch or an E stitch and is like a double check in case you cut a stitch or two while trimming your fabric. When the second tacking stitch is complete your machine will apply the final outline stitch, usually a satin stitch, putting the finishing touch on your applique. You’re done already! Now unhoop it, admire your creativity, and do another one using a different fabric and create something entirely different. See how darned additive machine embroidered appliques are?
